Toyota Litigation Consolidated Before Central District of California

Nearly 200 lawsuits filed against Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. will be consolidated in the Central District of California, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation announced on Friday.

The panel appeared to have been swayed by two arguments that Toyota’s lead counsel maintained during a hearing last month in San Diego:

1.   Toyota’s U.S. headquarters is in nearby Torrance, Calif., and

2.  more lawsuits have been filed against Toyota in that district than in any other.

As we have indicated in earlier reports, the litigation is creating work for e-discovery vendors, staffing agencies and Japanese fluent contract attorneys — for both the plaintiff and defendant sides — across the country .   Many are pouring through the documents produced at the congressional hearings on Toyota’s safety problems which yielded crucial insights that determined what Toyota knew and when.  We have 1,200+ attorneys registered on our Japanese listserv and scores have emailed to tell us they are being scooped up by numerous law firms and agencies.   But that is not due solely to the Toyota litigation (see our companion story on foreign language document reviews by clicking here).
