13 February 2024 – When I first got involved in the world of e-discovery, information governance, and the practice and business management challenges in the legal market, Ron Friedmann was “the guy you need to meet”.

I’ve now known Ron for well over 15 years, and he has spent well over two decades working in the legal market, his background and experience well suited to help lawyers solve their toughest practice and business management challenges. Ron was the first person to introduce me to the nascent technology being developed for contract analytics, part of a packet of software and services “that would help legal departments analyze contracts and use that information to deliver results more efficiently with higher quality and lower cost”. He is always way ahead of the pack. He saw very early on how “information analytics” would drive most business operations: revenue recognition, compensation, services and product delivery, risk assessments, etc., etc.

And he saw how the burgeoning use of machine learning (ML) in the legal industry would make ML “an additional member of the legal team” and would eventually support and scale the work of all lawyers.

My video team caught up with Ron at Legalweek 2024 in NYC two weeks ago and Ron had an opportunity to opine on how he saw corporate legal departments dealing with generative AI versus what BigLaw was doing with it, how that might change and the impact it will have, how you need to adopt the right motivations and framework (use cases and workflows) for lawyers to truly embrace this new tech, the big problems with that tech … and lots more.
